Will Kiefer's Surgery Affect Real Time?

24 Spoilers - Will Kiefer's Surgery Affect Real Time?

Jack Bauer has nothing on us, but we have plenty on him.

24 spoilers

In real life, Kiefer Sutherland is nearly as badass as Jack Bauer himself. He parties hard, rides bucking broncos and is even man enough to allow himself to be photographed wearing a dress - not to mention sitting with his pants around his ankles at a restaurant. (We won't go into the whole Christmas tree thing). But we all learned that Kiefer, unlike Bauer, has a breaking point when he abandoned production to have surgery on a ruptured cyst near his kidney. Ouch. FOX assured gloomy fans that the 'elective' surgery wouldn't impact 24's production - and it didn't. Sutherland was cleared back to action last week and things are moving along smoothly enough so that the audience will be oblivious to Kiefer's time out. Here are some details on the actual impact of this ordeal, as well as some morsels for upcoming episodes of 24.

  • No scripts were harmed in the making of this surgery. When Kiefer went in for surgery, 24 production just shuffled the calendar around and shot nothing but scenes Bauer wouldn't have been in anyway - eventually taking a brief pause. (FOX)
  • On the high-profile guest star side of things, Mare Winningham is said to turn in a performance that is absolutely heart wrenching in this week's 24. Winningham will play the mother of Marcos Al-Zacar (played by Rami Malek), a young terrorist recruit we met last week. (EW)
  • Insiders are calling upcoming episodes "classic 24." Not really sure how to take that, I guess it is meant to assuage the fears of 24 fans not digging this New York style. Word is this week's episode, for instance, will feature some Jack and Chloe teaming that hearkens to Bauer's renegade days. (EW)

2/10

  • First, Keifer Sutherland's contract is up with FOX. If you were the star of FOX's number two scripted drama, wouldn't you be negotiating for a little more bank? The issue here is, even at number two 24 is one of FOX's most expensive shows. Can you hear the sound of a profit margin shrinking? Sounds a bit like... cancellation. [EW]
  • But wait, there's more. It has been confirmed that screenwriting superstar Billy Ray (without the Cyrus) has been brought in to pitch his ideas for a 24 hour movie. So would this movie be called "two" since it obviously wouldn't be 24 hours long? Nope, early word is that it would still cover the events of a sleepless, bathroom-break-free - day just not in real-time. I thought that was what made 24 stand apart to begin with.
